An article in the Guardian recently reported that every week 39 pubs close their doors. Depressingly the article reports there are now more supermarkets then pubs in the UK.

In some communities villagers have even clubbed together to buy shares in their village pubs to stop their closure.

The pubs that do well locally, such as the Half Moon at Rushall, appear to get most of their revenue from food sales.

In our latest poll we are keen to hear if you eat at the Kings Head or if you would do.

South Norfolk MP Richard Bacon has criticised plans for a Gypsy and traveller site in Brockdish.

He met with members of Brockdish and District Working Group at the proposed site last Friday, which is on the A143 corridor, south of Scole Road.

In a letter to South Norfolk Council’s director of planning, Andrew Gregory, Mr Bacon said he felt the site went against South Norfolk Council’s policy that there should be no more than one site per parish and there was already a site in Brockdish.

He also drew attention to the fact that Norfolk County Council’s Highways Department had made a firm transport objection and the area was of outstanding beauty and environmental sensitivity.

Mr Bacon’s comments were part of the eight-week consultation period, which has been held to discuss the suitability of the proposed sites.

Ronnie Hoare, chairman of South Norfolk Gypsy and Traveller Working Group, said: “We’re grateful to Richard Bacon for joining this consultation.

“His comments and concerns will be considered carefully alongside the many hundreds of representations we have received so far from our community.”

We visited with my Father-in-law and it was really nice.

Attractions included the Tombola, Cakes, Refreshments, various other stalls and, of course, the wonderful garden.

Picturesque is an understatement as you can see from the photo above!

I will update this item when I know how much was raised for Waveney First Responders. Thank you to John and Jackie for opening their garden and putting on the other attractions for such a worthy cause.

Update: over £1000 was raised!

The four churches festival will be returning to the Waveney Valley in May with rock legend Rick Wakeman once again at the helm.

The world-renowned keyboard player, and star of television series Grumpy Old Men, lives in the Diss area where the festival is based. And he will be joined by a cast of musicians, comedians and actors including Nicholas Parsons, television comedy producer Charles Garland and Keith Skues, awarded an MBE in 2004 for his services to broadcasting and charity.

“It always gives me immense pleasure to perform in these ancient and unique buildings, and I am really looking forward to working alongside the talented artists booked for this event,” said Mr Wakeman who lives next door to the Rev Trevor Riess, the priest in charge of the four parishes.

“Working with the team from the local churches also enables me to see how a few dedicated people ensure that these fabulous buildings are looked after for the benefit of everyone in the community.”

The festival opens with a comedy night with Joe Goodman and special guests at Billingford church on Wednesday May 27, followed by an evening with Nicholas Parsons at All Saints Church, Thorpe Abbots, the following day. He will also chair a live version of Radio 4′s hit show ‘Just a Minute’ at Brockdish church on Friday May 29 that includes Rick Wakeman in the line-up.

The festival concludes on Saturday May 30 with two performances by Gordon Giltrap, one of the UK’s most respected guitarists, at St Andrew’s Church, Scole.

Mr Riess said: “The festival embodies the medieval ideal of churches as community centres – places where Christian worship takes place alongside a whole range of other activities that enhance the quality of people’s lives.

“We are all really looking forward to welcoming this year’s performers as well as the many hundreds of people who will be coming to see them.”
