Opposition to Brockdish traveller site

Posted by: Stephen In: Local Information| News

RESIDENTS of Brockdish have set up a working group to spearhead opposition to proposals for a permanent gipsy and traveller settlement in their village.

The site is one of nine potential locations put forward by South Norfolk Council, which is looking to make up a shortfall in its services for travelling communities in the district.

The decision to set up Brockdish Working Group followed a public meeting at the village hall, which was packed to capacity.

David Jarrold, the group’s spokes-man, said: “The residents of Brock-dish feel very strongly that this is an inappropriate choice of site when considering factors such as the impact on the surrounding environ-ment, the dramatic increase in numbers at the school and the safety concerns regarding the highways.”

The land earmarked for the development is next to the A143 Yarmouth to Diss road, with the site access close to its junction with the main road leading to the village.

The plot overlooks the River Waveney, and the owner of the land informed the meeting that he was against the proposal and had put the matter of compulsory purchase in the hands of his agent.

The parish council also outlined its opposition to the site, key issues being the environment and a conflict with planning policies. Objections were voiced too by the head of Brockdish school and local county council representative, who feels the site fails to meet highways standards.

Why use council tax money to accomodate them,if you gave them a site to live on they would on trash it.I know of plenty of travellers sites and they have all been trashed. In Norwich they even gave them council houses and they trashed them like in Tippett Close Norwich.

Further to last comment, Tippett Close has 33 properties in it,and it was a quiet Close, until the Norwich City Council decided to house 7 Traveller families there, and as normal residents move out,the overspill from the 7 traveller houses move into the empty properties,so soon all the properties in Tippett Close will be lived in by travellers, and this could happen anywhere even Brockdish. The Police are always in the Close now and neither the Council or the Police will do anything about anti social behaviour.and this will only get worse throughout the country.

I work for SNDC and we are supposed to go onto all these travellers sites and empty their wheelie bins, but due to our safety fears we will not go onto the sites alone.personally I would not go onto them at all, they are disgusting places, the ones we do go onto, have stolen wheelie bins which come from other villages as most have people’s addresses on them.but the travellers don’t care they don’t take the stickers off.
at the end of the day they only have to ask for a bin and we will deliver free of charge, but they would rather steal them,so if they are so low as to steal a wheelie bin what else would they steal? place these sites well out of the way of towns and villages.

SNDC has built a new travellers site close to the Harford Park and ride in Norwich, and when it first opened it was like a Haven Holiday camp it was impressive, there were purpose built little bungalows with hardstands beside each one for a caravan, now only 6 weeks later it is like a tip, there are horses everywhere, rubbish littering as far as the eye can see,it is disgusting.and as for the park and ride yards away,I wouldn’t park my car close to a Gypo camp..ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING.

Why spend money on travellers sites? they have plenty of money themselves to spend on their own sites, then if they trash the site then its their money they have wasted. Like a male in Norwich who trashes everything and flytips and gets away with it.. they go into local supermarkets and thieve and then when they get caught nothing is done about it, try putting then on dis-used oil rigs !!
